Building Writing Habit

Hello #EdukaPeople

Some students are extremely unconfident and unenthusiastic in writing. Therefore, Before Building the writing habit, we need to know what makes students unconfident and unenthusiastic in writing.

There may be many reasons for this: perhaps they’ve never written much in English languages, even in their first language, they don’t have interest in writing, perhaps they think that they don’t have anything to say and can’t come up with ideas Many students either think or say that they cannot or do not want to write. This may be because they lack confidence, thiks it’s boring or believe they have nothing to sya.. Whatever the reasons, as teacher, we need to help such students build the writing habit. So, they recognize as being a normal part of classroom practice and they come to writing tasks with as much enthusiasm as they do other activities. To do that, give them interesting and enjoyable tasks to do. We need to engage them, from early levels, with activities which are easy and enjoyable to take part in, so that writing activities not only become a normal part of classroom life but also present opportunities for students.

Building the writing habit can be done with a range of activities, such as promote instant writing by dictating half a sentence which the students have to complete Atau mungkin bisa juga pakai pictures untuk menstimulasikan ide mereka pada menulis. Free writing — is a technique in which a person writes continuously for a set period of time without regard to spelling, grammar, or topic Collaborative writing has the power to foster the writing habit in a unique way as it allows students to learn from each other

Whatever the activities, The important point is to provide interesting activities for students to develop their writing skills as a habit. Like Harmer (2014: 61) suggests that we should spend more time focusing on building a writing habit, that is, “making students feel comfortable as writers in English and gaining their willing participation in more creative or extended activities”
